My creative research has drawn inspiration from nature through the transfer of organic textures onto the human head. This series that I have called “Human Nature” is my personal reflection on how our brains as human beings are influeced by our surroundings. Using various clays and layering glazes I am able to achieve a wide range of colors in varying degrees of subtly or contrast. This pallette relates directly to my visual natural surrounding that informs my work. Additionally, I employ many facial expressions and often exagerate features in an effort to depict the diversity of human beings and their thought processes. The accumulation of built up surfaces and colors alongside a range of expressions I hope portrays the idea that each individual is unique depending on their personal experiences. And, if our experiences and emotions were revealed as the color of our skin we might end up looking like one of my sculptures. |
